From Costa Rica to the Philippines (not so direct)

SJO-LAX-TPE-MNL (May 14 - May 17)

At the San José airport on my way out of Costa Rica, I met two girls from Los Angeles who had been backpacking CR for a few weeks. When I told them I had 6 hours to kill in LA before my flight to Taiwan, they offered to take me around the city.. It turned out to be the best stopover ever!!

They picked me up from the hotel the next morning and we went to Manhattan Beach. Although the weather wasn't quite like Costa Rica, it still felt great to go for a swim! We had lunch and hung around the town for a bit, then they dropped me back off at the airport.

Then I had a great flight from LAX to Taiwan. I watched Guilt Trip, Oz the Great and Powerful, Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters, half of a documentary on UFOs, Gangster Squad, Broken City (slept through most of it), and Walk the Line.

14 hours like this but the complimentary slippers made it okay ;)

It was a funny feeling knowing that the airport hotel in Taiwan was going to be the nicest place I would stay for the next three months.

It was a long stretch but I made it to Manila safely!!

A restaurant/bar in Manuel Antonio built around the body of a plane that supposedly crash landed onto this hill.

Nikas Surf Shop:

A Costa Rican guy who hand shapes his surfboards at his workshop/home.

We went for dinner but weaseled our way into a tour of Zephyr Palace, 7 themed suites that have hosted several celebrity guests...

A great place for lunch!

The Big Easy

I think I might already be behind on my blog posts.. Time to catch up!

John and I had some trouble getting to New Orleans. Our milk run of an itinerary (yhz-yyz-dfw-msy) was altered early on when our flight out of Halifax was delayed.. So we missed our other connections and spent the night in Toronto. We were rerouted through Miami the next day and, after being delayed again, arrived in New Orleans. (Nearly 24 hours later than planned).

Our time in Nola was jam packed with site seeing, incredible food, and LOTS of live music. Notable eats/drinks included all you can eat crawfish, alligator sausages, shrimp po-boys, billion dollar bacon, jambalaya, drive-thru daiquiris, and hand grenades.

(I don't know how to add videos to this thing yet, but for now, this link should work!!)

On Thursday, we went to a place with unlimited crawfish and 2$ beers, then to a place called Le Bon Temps Roulé to see one of Nola's best brass bands.

Our boy on the trombone.

Friday, we spent the morning walking through Tulane and Loyola campuses, then Audubon Park.

School zone..

Johnny

And we spent the rest of Friday at the jazz festival!!!!!!

Nice guitar..

Saturday morning, we took the street car (the oldest functional street car in America) into New Orleans' famous French Quarter.

And we took the ferry across the Misissippi river, just for fun :)

Then back to the jazz fest!!!

Had to zoom in pretty far to see the old guy, but it couldn't have been a better night!

After another amazing day at the jazz fest, we went out for dinner and spent our last night in New Orleans on the streets of the French Quarter.

Bourbon Street was absolutely packed after jazz fest opening weekend.. There was a new bar with different music pretty much every step we took.

We ended up at a place called Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, a bar lit only by candles. Mike Hood the Piano Man played an old piano that doubled as a bar.. Definitely the coolest bar I've been to! (Although the Carousel Bar was pretty cool too..)

And then we stumbled back out to the streets, one or two more bars, a beignet cafe (which trumped all of Halifax's "pizza corner" on its own), and safely made it to the airport for our 5:00am flight. (With a lot of help from our friend Rebecca).

Actually this reminds me that I haven't yet mentioned how many times Rebecca helped us out/made our trip 100x better than it would have been! From sorting out our accommodations, taking us to the best restaurants and bars, and letting us hang out with her and her friends in general, she definitely made our trip!!

Thank you Rebecca!!! :D
